LITTLE ADVENTURES.

the weather this week has been spectacular. like the kind of spectacular that just begs you to come out and play. after an assortment of illnesses and one too many hours cooped up inside, we were all getting cabin fever. this little day adventure at the park was just what we needed. anytime inspiration is lacking, i tell the kids we're going on a secret adventure and we need to pack a lunch. they typically let out a collective squeal and rush off to get their adventure gear ready to go. this time was no exception. they were positively giddy on the drive out to fox run park and the day didn't disappoint. we had a picnic lunch under the trees, played at the playground with new friends, examined a squished squirrel on the road(not my idea), sat by the pond watching the giant koi fish swim around, found rocks in the creek with tiny, slimy, squirmy things on them and hiked through the woods collecting pine cones for a craft project. the kids studied frogs a couple of weeks ago and were thrilled to spot a few frogs hanging around some algae in the pond and loads of tadpoles swarming about too. mama was thrilled to see the fall colors appearing, like on that little sapling pictured above. it was a lovely afternoon with my sweet ones. it always makes me so grateful for this time i get to be with them, rather than sending them off to school each day. they make my heart full.

UNSCHOOLING IN AUGUST.

since we don't use a traditional curriculum to learn, i've been keeping a weekly journal and book list for each of the kids. it helps remind me that they are indeed learning everyday and it is a simple way to keep records in the absence of worksheets, tests, and other traditional methods. even after a rough week with the flu, a toddler who refused to nap and the exhaustion of being a billion months pregnant, i was still surprised when i looked at their journals and realized how many things they accomplished during the week.

i've always loved christina's monthly activities and resources posts and i thought i'd use it as an inspiration to share our own unschooling resources for each month. things are constantly changing around here and since we're preparing to welcome a new baby anytime, i'm not sure exactly what our weeks will look like. that's one of the great things about unschooling though, no curriculum to get behind on. just new life adventures to learn from. for now, here is a little peek into our unschooling adventures in august.

THE FLU.

yep. i got the stomach flu for the first time since i was twelve years old and at thirty-five weeks pregnant, no less. wow, does it completely and utterly suck. what a miserable time i've had this week. did you know dehydration can cause painful contractions when you're pregnant? i didn't but, unfortunately i do now. thanks to some great suggestions from my midwife and getting to rest while paul held down the fort, i am feeling much better now. i'm already back in nesting mode and so darn ready for this baby to come. only four weeks now! here are some things that made the week a little more tolerable...

SEPTEMBER WEEKEND.

it is officially september and we are pretty excited about that around here! one, our favorite season starts this month and two, baby brother is due next month. mama is ridiculously stoked about both of those, especially the second thing.

the mister and i have been nesting machines this weekend. okay, okay so maybe i've been a nesting machine and paul has to keep rescuing me from my overzealous projects. either way since friday we have gotten almost everything checked off our, okay MY list, and it feels darn good.

friday night we had a backyard campout with the littles. we really wanted to take them on a camping trip but, paul has been fighting a bad sinus infection and i wasn't sure about hauling my 34 week pregnant self into the woods alone at night to pee! which we all know would have been an hourly occurrence. so we opted to roast marshmallows and make s'mores on the back deck, watch an episode of man vs wild on the ipad and snuggle up in our tent for the night. it was actually really fun and i think we might just take trips to our backyard campsite a little more often.

saturday and sunday were mostly spent napping, watching movies and hanging out together. labor day was filled with a few more nesting projects and no, i did not make my sick husband help me this time. the afternoon brought a few minutes of rain, which we've been needing and our crazy kids were more than thrilled to soak it in, literally.

we hope you all had a wonderful labor day too. happy september!

BUON APPETITE!

the littles have been studying italy this week and since we're all about hands on learning over here, we didn't want to miss the opportunity to eat as much italian food as possible. we picked out a foods of italy cookbook at the library and each of the kids chose a recipe they wanted to try. madi chose a traditional biscotti, jack chose good ole cheese pizza. they wrote out the recipes, made a grocery list and went to the store with mommy to pick up what they needed. madi made her biscotti from scratch completely on her own. jack decided on pre-made pizza crust and jarred sauce. everything was super delicious, even though madi later announced to the family that she forgot to wash her hands before she rolled out the biscotti dough. we plan to continue eating an obscene amount of pizza, pasta and pastries while we study italy.

some of what the littles learned during our foods of italy night:

  • handwriting practice(writing out recipes)
  • list making skills
  • navigating the grocery store
  • adding up the cost of their food items
  • following written directions
  • reading fractions in recipes
  • accurately measuring ingredients
  • how to use the oven and set the timer
  • how to say cheese, delicious and enjoy in italian

*also, today the kids drew michelangelo's sculpture of david. and i mean all of david. we tried to contain our hysterical laughter as we examined their anatomy-detailed sketches. i gotta give them props, they really did do a great job. oh the joy and laughter of learning.
